“A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single thought.”
At least that is what the tagline of Emotiv Life-sciences suggests. They seek to prove this concept with their device: the Emotiv Insight. The Emotiv Insight is a wireless headset that essentially, quantifies brainwaves when the wearer performs an activity. The data gathered can then be used to accomplish a multitude of things. Examples in the Kickstarter campaign video show: controlling an RC car, controlling an electric wheelchair, and even graphically designing images straight from the imagination.
The Emotiv Insight is composed of a five channel radio and dry polymer sensors powered by a 480mAh battery. The sensors monitor electrical impulses emitted from the brain to track several aspects of brain activity. Known measured aspects include: attention, focus, engagement, interest, relaxation, excitement, stress as well as basic commands like rotate, push, pull, and disappear.
The primary objective of the Insight is to allow families to optimize brain fitness and performance. The science is simple, if a person knows how their brain works; they are then more likely to know how to improve its efficiency. Aside from this task, the Insight is expected to provide other services such as gaming, transportation, defense and other activities thought up in the future.
The Emotive Insight has already been thoroughly funded through Kickstarter with several weeks to spare but the product may not see distribution until March of 2014. If the $230 pledge reward of the actual device is any indicator, you can expect it to be affordable by that time. As an extra incentive, the Emotiv Insight is designed to be compatible with Android and other mobile devices.
